The little gold altar was in the holy place. It was before the veil that separated the holy place from the Holy of Holies. It was the place to burn incense for God.
Yom Kippur is the day of Atonement.
There wasn’t an actual census of the people. They were forbidden by God to number the people. They determined how many people there were by having every man over the age of 20 give a half shekel. This was done every year.
