The Gardarenes were descendants of the tribe of Gad. They chose to settle on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee when the Israelite’s first entered the Promised Land.

“Decapolis” is a reference to the ten main cities in that area. It was common to hire professional mourners to weep over the death of a loved one.
