Jesus came down from the mountain because the Sermon on the Mount was over. He was approached by a man with leprosy and the man asked to be healed if Jesus was willing. The term “If You Are Willing” indicates genuine faith not if one simply believes. Jesus wanted to make him well so he touched the man and he was healed. Jesus broke the Jewish law by touching this man because he was an outcast due to his leprosy (Lev. 14:45, 46).
Jesus was approached by a centurion (officer in charge of one hundred soldiers) when he had entered Capernaum. The centurion showed a strong understanding of authority and Jesus was marveled at his great faith. This was a strong rebuke of the Jewish people. The Isrealites thought they would have priority in the coming kingdom. Jesus made it clear that just because they are a direct descendant of Abraham it doesn’t guarantee them entrance into his kingdom.
Jesus continues to heal many on his journey. In the end of this chapter he heals demon possessed men. We learn that demons recognize Jesus as the Son of God, they’re limited in knowledge and know they will be judged by Christ.
