Jesus gives his twelve disciples power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. Then scripture lists the twelve apostles in pairs, it’s assumed they were sent out that way. They’re now called apostles because they’re given authority. I assume we’ll hear them called both names, I’m just glad I know the difference now.
Jesus asked his disciples to spread the good news to the Jews. The Jews were Jesus’ focus when he was here on earth. The apostles were to seek homes with good reputations. Jesus didn’t want them to try to find homes that were more desirable. Jesus tells them to “greet” the house, this meant to bless the house. If the apostles found that the occupants rejected the message, they were to remove the blessing.
Jesus explains to the apostles to be wise because they will be in the “midst of wolves” (they would be exposed to hatred and violence from people). The apostles are reminded to “fear God” and that everything we do will be evaluated at the judgment seat.
We are reminded that if we don’t follow Jesus we will experience great loss. We need to be willing to die for him.
