Start Your Spring Cleaning with 5 Easy Organizational Tips

There’s nothing like the first glimpse of daffodil shoots peeking their way out of the soil or the first sighting of a red-breasted robin to bring about a feeling of distinct joy. Spring is full of possibility and renewal, making it a wonderful time to get organized and shake out the cobwebs of winter with a clean house! Clearing away clutter will give you a fresh start for the year and a renewed sense of appreciation for your home. Throw open your windows, let the sun stream in, and use the following tips to get organized.

Take it one day at a time.

It’s natural to feel optimistic and ambitious as you start tidying, but spring cleaning can be overwhelming when you try to do everything in one day! It’s helpful to focus on one area of the house or project each day. You can either go room by room, or decide to tackle cluttered closets one day and your refrigerator another day. This will help give you the time to organize everything and clean each room from top to bottom, without feeling stressed or anxious.

Use clear containers.

To maintain an organized household, you’ll need the right tools. Clear plastic trays can be used in the office, bedroom, and kitchen to store objects and make them easier to find. In the refrigerator, use clear tubs to separate cheese, baking items, and condiments. Your kitchen cupboards could also benefit from clear containers to store flour, sugar, beans, and other dried goods. In the office, you can use clear containers to store glue, rubber bands, and other supplies without rifling through drawers in search of a spare paper clip.

Install time-saving appliances.

If your fridge is constantly full of old water bottles, you may want to look for home water coolers to save time and money. These allow you to refill water bottles when you’re on the go. There are plenty of appliances like rice cookers and bread machines that can make life easier in the kitchen. A boiling hot water tap is another appliance that can save you the time of waiting for a kettle to boil. As you create new workspace during cleaning, treat yourself to a new appliance that will help you stay organized.

Clean out the junk drawer.

Most of us have desk or cabinet drawers that started out somewhat organized but are now a jumble of coupons, post-it notes, and old receipts. Take the time to dump out your junk drawer and go through these miscellaneous papers. Get rid of expired coupons and other non-essential items, and use a file folder or system of labelled envelopes to organize the rest of your papers.

Donate or recycle old items.

As you tackle your closet, it’s time to be honest. If you have dresses or tops that don’t fit, think of the use that they will give someone else. Donating old clothing to charity helps free up space in your closet, and gives someone in need a new wardrobe. Take an afternoon to try on all of your clothing and toss anything that doesn’t fit or that doesn’t match your sense of style.

These are just a few tips to keep in mind as you start renewing your home from top to bottom. With clean surfaces and reduced clutter, you’ll feel energized just in time for the warm weather!
